Nassau County Fifth Precinct officers initiated a car stop on a vehicle that was observed failing to maintain its lane of travel on Friday, July 27, at 8:24 p.m. in West Hempstead. Officers were able to stop the vehicle on Hempstead Turnpike near the intersection of Broadway. After having the driver, 21-year-old Anthony Grassi of Floral Park, exit his vehicle, Grassi fled the scene on foot with officers running after him. During the pursuit and apprehension of Grassi, both officers sustained minor injuries causing them to be treated in an area hospital.
A subsequent investigation revealed the Grassi was operating the vehicle in an impaired manner. In his vehicle officers discovered 84 small plastic bags containing cocaine, a black scale and a container of pepper spray.
Grassi is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of second-degree assault, driving while ability impaired and two vehicle and traffic law violations.
Grassi was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead the next day.
