Herricks High School’s Mixed Chorus had the opportunity to work with two guest musicians during clinics held this fall. Long Island composer and musician Rich Campbell recently visited and Hofstra University Music Professor Dr. David Fryling also spent time a few weeks earlier.
Campbell’s visit took place just in time for the chorus members to perform his pieces at their Dec. 20 concert. One song, “If I Can Sing, I Still Am Free,” is based on a poem by Sara Teasdale with a driving rhythmic accompaniment. Campbell explained why he composed the piece in a particular way and how his thoughts translated musically. The students were able to make a deeper connection to the piece and were left with several inspiring notions.
“Make it personal, imagine the words as your own and to sing with conviction,” Campbell said.
Fryling’s session focused on vocal technique. Students learned how to tell a story and engage their audience while working on the song, “Soon Ah Will Be Done,” by William Dawson.
