Sneha Abraham and English teacher Mike Meehan were both honored at this year’s Long Island Language Arts Council Spring Luncheon.

The Herricks Public Schools were well represented at this year’s Long Island Language Arts Council Spring Luncheon, held at Captain Bill’s in Bayshore. This event celebrated the winners of the annual Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest in grades four, seven and 10.
Herricks Middle School seventh-grader Sneha Abraham was named a third-place winner for her poem, which was written in response to the theme, “We’re more alike than different.” She and her English teacher Mike Meehan were both honored, and Abraham took home three books as a prize.

Herricks High School English teacher Alan Semerdjian was featured as the event’s keynote speaker. His presentation, titled “Dylan, Dickinson and the Difference Between Poetry and Song,” focused on the intersections of song lyrics and poetry. Semerdjian spun together both his own original poetry and songs with the poetry and songs of others, including a Bob Dylan cover.
